Remember the good ol’ days of heading down to Blockbusters to rent a movie for your Friday night entertainment? Well if you’re a millenial or older you will. If you’re Gen Z, there was a time you didn’t have thousands of movies and TV shows at the click of a button. You had to head into town and rent out a movie or film, like the library. You would either get a VHS or a DVD of your selected movie, bring it home throw it in the player and you had 5 - 7 days to bring it back to the store.

I think this day and age we are very much spoilt for choice and no doubt the endless sea of social media will drop you some upcoming trailers of new films and clips of some classics so maybe this blog series will be a bit redundant but it’s worth a shot. Plus I think we have more analysis paralysis nowadays that sometimes we spend more time choosing an actual movie or film to watch that we could’ve watched several by the time we’ve actually picked something. So if you struggle with indecision, stick around! Kicking off our recommendations list for 5 horror film recommendations about witchcraft are;

"bkjtqzyk6jpaebaydiyhx40r01vm82fvxdhmc8jus6fhtcpx.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"The Wicker Man (1973)

Everyone has probably heard of this witchcraft horror classic. "The Wicker Man," is a British cult classic that takes us to the claustrophobic and eery island of Summerisle. When a police officer arrives to investigate a missing child, he finds himself amidst a community of pagans practicing ancient rituals. As the officer delves deeper into the island's secrets, he realizes the horrifying truth behind their beliefs. With a gripping storyline and a chilling climax, "The Wicker Man" remains a cornerstone of the genre.

"l9iiiizanud2ew6cyxsggtqxz0876i8hhqeq1kmjog6rxmb6.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"The Craft (1996)

A nostalgically modern take on witchcraft and another cult classic, "The Craft" explores the lives of four teenage misfits who practice witchcraft to gain popularity, power and control. As they experiment with their newfound abilities, their desires spiral out of control, leading to devastating consequences. This film delves into the darkness within human nature and the dangerous allure of supernatural forces and it’s safe to say this film kickstarted a whole wave of New Age, wiccan and paganistic culture.

"xh5irrlasbvf0uo4hf4hlha1pwyxnnjl7mex6uakhc7kuf5s.png.png?w=1140&v=2"The Witch (2015)

This is very much a slow burn with worth-the-wait pay off. Set in 1630s New England, "The Witch" follows a Puritan family as they face the eerie and malevolent forces lurking in the woods near their isolated farm. Accusations of witchcraft arise within the family, tearing them apart as paranoia and fear grip their souls. The film has an unsettling tone to it which almost feels like the characters become more and more infected by it as the story unfolds.

"fht6djq7v1u177wfgid9zuk9nnopupcx91oo6wzxmycksnwg.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"Suspiria (1977 and 2018)

Technically two recommendations in one. Dario Argento's original "Suspiria" is another cult film stands the test of time as one of Argento’s best. If you’re a fan of classic giallo films this is definitely one to add to your watch list. As a young ballet dancer enters the academy, she discovers that it harbours a coven of witches with a sinister agenda. The 2018 remake by Luca Guadagnino is a worth mention as it pays homage to the original quite cleverly whilst holding it’s own when it comes to style and execution. Both versions of the film are known for their vivid visuals, intense scores, and a sense of impending doom that permeates every scene.

"9v80z1awiws35kfbqr3zgugq1trqbsuin6uf26o9ogzionpf.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"Lords of Salem (2012)

I think when it comes to Rob Zombie, you either love him or hate him but no one can deny he has some truly memorable films. "Lords of Salem" starring his wife Sherrie Moon dives into the life of a radio DJ who receives a mysterious vinyl record that triggers a series of disturbing events tied to the Salem witch trials. As she uncovers the record's connection to a coven of witches, she becomes entangled in a nightmarish web of rituals and horrors. The film combines unsettling visuals with an eerie soundtrack to create an unforgettable experience. There are some truly great actresses in this to geek out over too such as Dee Wallace and Meg Foster.
