Friday Night Nightmare presents … 5 Mike Flanagan films and TV shows to watch! If you haven’t heard of Mike Flanagan there is a high chance you have heard of some of his films and TV shows. Flanagan’s work often blends elements of supernatural horror with emotional depth! And with the release of ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ literally here, which is bound to be another hit among Flanagan’s fans, let’s kick off the list with some other recommendations!

5) Hush

"HushStarring Kate Siegel, Mike Flanagan’s wife, who features in the majority of his work, “Hush”, tells the story of a talented author who lost her hearing and speech as a teenager due to illness and who lives an isolated life in a remote house surrounded by woods. She's working on her next book and communicates with her friends and family through text messages and video chats. Her world is disrupted when a masked stranger appears outside her window one night. The film showcases not only Flanagan’s directorial style but also both Flanagan and Siegel’s visionary writing skills.

4) Doctor Sleep

"Doctor’Doctor Sleep’ was the highly anticipated follow up to cinema mastermind, Stanley Kubrick’s, ‘The Shining’, based on the Stephen King novel. Following the success of ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, Flanagan was entrusted to direct the sequel to the horror classic and it’s safe to say he didn’t disappoint. Flanagan has that Kubrick flare and has a meticulous way of hiding things in plain sight. ‘Doctor Sleep’ lends some of its success to its cast Ewan McGreggor who plays Danny Torrance, the now, grown-up boy from ‘The Shining’ and Rebecca Ferguson, who plays the main antagonist Rose the Hat but Flanagan’s stylistic stamp is what’s really shining (lame attempt) through in this one!

3) The Haunting of Bly Manor

"The’The Haunting of Bly Manor’, was the highly hoped-for follow up to Flanagan’s hit show, ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ and it didn’t disappoint. Flanagan adapted ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’ from the famous novella ‘The Turn of the Screw’, by Henry James. Fans were pleased to see the return of some of ‘Hill House’s cast in all new roles that skilfully retold James’ story. Among the returning cast members was Victoria Pedretti who played the show’s lead, Dani Clayton, an American nanny who is hired to look after the two children at Bly Manor. Flanagan did take some liberties in weaving elements of James’ other works throughout the story and also choosing to set the story in the 1980’s but overall ‘Bly Manor’ was a stand up successor to ‘Hill House’.

2) Midnight Mass

"Midnight’Midnight Mass’ is another fan favourite when it comes to Flanagan’s works. An original creation, ‘Midnight Mass’, is set in a weary town on a lonely island. Zach Gilford plays the troubled Riley Flynn, who returns to the island after a number of years to a rather cold reception. Riley’s return coincides with the arrival of a new parish priest, Father Paul Hill, played by Hamish Linklater. The arrival of both men, sees the town experience a number of mysterious and sinister happenings involving a creature dubbed as ‘The Angel’. The cast also sees returning faces from both ‘Hill House’ and ‘Bly Manor’. Again it has all of the trademark elements of suspense and tense emotions. There can be comparisons drawn between a number of well known horror films in this one, including ‘The Wickerman’ and ‘Salem’s Lot’.

1) The Haunting of Hill House

"TheLastly and it may come as no surprise … ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, is our number one recommendation for those wishing to seek out Flanagan’s work after the release of ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’. Flanagan had a number of well-received horror titles in the lead up to ‘Hill House’ but it really was a stand out piece for Flanagan that sky rocketed him to his present success and reputation. This is probably the bar, most fans will hold Flanagan to, as he furthers his career. Flanagan's ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ is adapted from the Shirley Jackson famous ghost story of the same name. Flanagan’s retelling centres around the seemingly cursed Crain family who each deal with their trauma of growing up in a haunted house in different ways. Flanagan has a knack for crafting really well-rounded and investable characters and as much as you stick around for the ghosts (who mostly are hidden in the backgrounds of the scenes) it really is the characters that draw you in. Both child and adult actors are perfectly cast and all give formidable and chilling performances. There are so many easter eggs throughout the show and again, Flanagan, seems to have perfectly honed that Kubrick style skill for hiding symbols and messages within each of the episodes. The show very much explores the themes of trauma and grief and at times has some pretty emotional scenes. The highly revered episode within the series is episode 6, ‘Two Storms’, where Flanagan with the help of his talented DOP, Michael Fimognari and the entire cast and crew created the entire episode around one seemingly endless take, with the longest shot lasting 17 minutes. The cast and crew rehearsed this months in advance almost like a theatrical piece and it really is just stunning to watch from a technical, film geeky perspective. Everything from cues to FX to actors being replaced with body doubles … yeah it really is just mesmerising to watch.

We very much predict equal success and acclaim for Flanagan’s new show, ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ and we’re stoked to watch it!
