Growing up one fairy tale stood head and shoulders above the rest for me and that was Hansel and Gretel. I was so disturbed by it that whenever I’d see a lone cabin or gamekeeper’s hut in a park I immediately put two and two together and deemed there to be a hideous, witch who had an appetite for children. That and I had some equally disturbing adults that used to feed into this narrative.

Ever since then there has always been this dark call of the void whenever it came to adaptations of Hansel & Gretel and I’m also making a suggestion that there may need to be more horror fairy tale films. So here are 5 Horror Film Recommendations About Hansel & Gretel;

"bkjtqzyk6jpaebaydiyhx40r01vm82fvxdhmc8jus6fhtcpx.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"Hansel & Gretel (2007)

Maybe I’ll do a blog on Korean horror films another day. One of my exes was an avid Korean cinema fan and one night we ended up watching this version of Hansel & Gretel. It is as you would expect beautifully shot and diverts from the original folktale. Directed by Pil-sung Yim, this version tells the story of a young salesman who becomes lost in a forest. He is met by a young girl who leads him to a mysterious but seemingly warm family home. It’s soon clear that the children won’t let him leave. If you are a fan of Korean cinema this is definitely one to add to your list.

"l9iiiizanud2ew6cyxsggtqxz0876i8hhqeq1kmjog6rxmb6.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"Gretel & Hansel (2020)

A fairly recent retelling of the Grimm’s fairy tale. This version is very close to what I imagined the witch from my childhood would look like. The actress who plays the witch is Alice Krige who you may recognise from the Silent Hill movie and the actress playing Gretel is Sophia Lillis who rose to fame after starring in the remake of IT. This version is filled with occult symbology and captures that sense of foreboding in every scene and equally in every shot. The film explores the classic fairy tale from Gretel’s perspective and has some pretty gross and disturbing scenes.

"xh5irrlasbvf0uo4hf4hlha1pwyxnnjl7mex6uakhc7kuf5s.png.png?w=1140&v=2"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)

There was also a mock buster of Hansel & Gretel the same year as this, with the fantastic Dee Wallace although it is only worth mentioning if you check out the trailer. In this version of Hansel & Gretel, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, it does play more on an action fantasy retelling with some horror elements where Hansel & Gretel have grown up to be as the title suggests, witch hunters. This film hits all of the cheesy elements of an action fantasy as you can expect but the actual design of the witches in this are worth noting especially Muriel played by Famke Janssen. It’s an easy watch compared to the others on the list.

"fht6djq7v1u177wfgid9zuk9nnopupcx91oo6wzxmycksnwg.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"Hansel & Gretel (2006)

This next one is a short film directed by Robert Eggers and is shot in the style of the European silent movies of the early 1900’s. It’s definitely interesting to compare this early work of Eggers to his highly acclaimed films, The Lighthouse (2019) and The Witch (2015). A low resolution version of this is available to watch on YouTube and makes for one of those after midnight viewings where you’re too tired to sleep but not awake enough to comprehend time or reality. The black and white grade on this also adds to the creepiness of the witch’s face, which in all honesty is probably an unpolished silicone or latex mask but the minimal lighting, home camera and unrefined movements of the actress makes for a pretty scary witch.

"9v80z1awiws35kfbqr3zgugq1trqbsuin6uf26o9ogzionpf.jpg.jpg?w=1140&v=2"The City of Lost Children (1995)

Now unless you’re a bit of a geek like me you might know that Hansel and Gretel draws from other folk tales and one that holds a lot of similarities is a French fairy tale called The Lost Children. Although I couldn’t find a direct retelling of this, I did stumble upon quite an obscure film but one if you’re a fan of whimsical, sci fi esque films starring Ron Pearlman. Stylistically this is a great film to watch and holds a gritty, steam punkish feel. The premise isn’t a witch however, it’s in fact a mad scientist who kidnaps children and feeds off their dreams.
