This unique event invites horror fans to come, watch the films, and meet the creative minds behind them, including directors, producers, cast, and crew, as well as connect with the passionate community of Horror On Sea attendees.

To give readers an insider look, we interviewed Paul, the director of Horror On Sea, about the festival’s origins, standout elements, and what makes it so special. Below is the interview in Paul’s own words:

Interview with Paul, Director of Horror-On-Sea

1) What inspired the creation of Horror On Sea? How did it come about?

“In 2012, I was approached by the Park Inn by Radisson Palace Hotel in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, to see if I could bring an event to their hotel in January 2013 to help keep their hotel busy through one of the quietest months of the year. We put our heads together at my film company (The White Bus) and decided to try running a new horror film festival at the hotel. After giving this idea a lot of thought, I decided to make the festival for independently made horror films only, as this was an area of the film festival circuit in the UK that was overlooked at the time.”

2) How do you choose which films to showcase?

“This is a team effort as we have so many films to view each year. As the majority of the films that are submitted to the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival for consideration are made on a very low budget, we tend to judge the films on their entertainment value, as we want to give the audience a good time.”

<img src="https://images.teemill.com/djbk3a7z61umaeniglnmcy22ph19k95pclhbwix7yzo8v5v9.jpeg.jpeg?w=1140&v=2" alt="Horror On Sea Film Festival 2025 promotional poster, showcasing a retro-styled, terrified woman against a grunge background with red blood splatter. People can stay at the hotel who are attending the film festival, so everything is under one roof. The hotel also has a very large bar area which is excellent for networking and relaxing between films. We also have our famous faux VHS shop, which is situated near the bar. Filmmakers who have films screening during the festival are encouraged to design a VHS cover of their film, which is then slipped into a video case and displayed in our video shop throughout the 6 days of the festival.”

4) What's been some of your favourite films?

“This is a hard question to answer, although I must say that we are delighted that a feature film has been made that was inspired by our faux video shop display. This was a portmanteau film entitled VIDEO SHOP TALES OF TERROR, and at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival 2025, we will be screening the world premiere of VIDEO SHOP TALES OF TERROR 2: LUST AND REVENGE.”

5) Any upcoming events? Where can everyone find you?

“We run film events throughout the year, which include the Southend-on-Sea Film Festival and a cult horror film evening once a month. Please check out our website for full details of our film screenings and events - www.thewhitebus.co.uk.”

Get Your Tickets and Join the Fun!

Horror On Sea is not just a film festival; it’s an experience where horror fans can come together to enjoy the best of independent filmmaking. Whether you’re attending for the screenings, the unique faux VHS shop, or the chance to meet like-minded fans, it’s an event not to be missed.
