A freshly debuted horror flick is receiving ecstatic praise as a "masterpiece" following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
A freshly debuted horror flick is receiving ecstatic praise as a "masterpiece" following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Horror movies thrive notably well at Sundance, with titles ranging from The Blair Witch Project to Hereditary creating waves after their premieres in the festival’s Midnight section before gaining worldwide cultural acclaim.

Among the films unveiled this year are Presence – marking the first true horror film from Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh, and Love Lies Bleeding, the upcoming work from Saint Maud director Rose Glass. However, drawing particularly impressive acclaim from critics is A24’s I Saw the TV Glow, the latest release from We’re All Going to the World’s Fair writer-director Jane Schoenbrun.

The movie, featuring Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine, delves into the blurred reality of two teenagers following the cancellation of their beloved TV show. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with IndieWire’s David Ehrlich dubbing the film “significant”, adding on X/Twitter: “It will go down as one of the best movies of the year.”

Writer @jasonosia from Fantastic Film Fans exclaimed the film "is precisely what #Sundance2024 embodies", further stating: “I need a moment to digest a movie of this artistic magnitude but bra-f***ing-vo!”

Meanwhile, Lyvie Scott from Inverse praised the film as a “chilling horror masterpiece”. Scott continued: “I Saw The TV Glow is bold, devastating, and best experienced with fresh eyes.” The film’s exploration of sexuality and trans identity has also been lauded, with Esther Rosenfield, writing for Little White Lies, asserting: “It’s rare for a film attempting to portray a trans narrative – whether intentionally or inadvertently – to succeed. I Saw The TV Glow aims even higher, and unquestionably hits its mark.”

I Saw the TV Glow currently lacks a release date, but is set to screen at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
